Thrilling Overnight Camping at Gunung Belumut Kluang. Last weekend my friends and I set off on a super exciting overnight camping trip to Gunung Belumut in Kluang, Johor. Some people spell it Berulmut or Berlumut, but most call it Belumut – the mossy mountain! It stands about 1010 meters high and sits inside a beautiful recreational forest. We wanted more than a normal day hike. We planned to sleep in the jungle, wake up near the top and take pictures right at the summit. The whole idea felt thrilling from the start.

Tall trees waved at us as if saying “Come and play!” Our hearts beat faster with excitement.
At the entrance we paid the camping fee and registered. The air smelled fresh and earthy. A clear stream flowed nearby and a hanging suspension bridge swung gently over the water. Birds called from the trees and butterflies danced around colorful flowers. Everything looked peaceful, yet we knew bigger challenges waited higher up.
Soon the trail grew steeper. Mud made our shoes slip. Exposed roots grabbed at our ankles. In some places thick ropes hung from trees to help us climb. We pulled ourselves up like monkeys, laughing and shouting “Almost there!” whenever someone slipped. Leeches appeared on our legs. One friend yelled when he found a fat one on his sock. We quickly pulled them off and put salt on the bites. It was a bit disgusting but also funny and thrilling – part of the jungle experience!

Late in the afternoon we arrived at Bukit Botak, the false summit or open clearing near 940 meters. This flat space looked perfect for camping. We quickly set up our tent before the sun disappeared. The ground was a little uneven, but we cleared stones and made it comfortable. One friend started the small stove and cooked hot Maggi noodles with eggs. The smell made everyone hungry. We sat on our mats, ate, and watched the sky turn orange and pink through the trees.
Night fell fast in the jungle. The real adventure began. We switched on headlamps and listened. Crickets sang loudly. Frogs croaked near distant water. Leaves rustled as small animals moved about. Once we heard a strange call that made us jump – maybe a bird or a gibbon far away. We told funny stories and scary jungle tales while the campfire (small and safe) crackled. Sleeping was not easy at first. The ground felt hard and the night grew colder. We pulled our sleeping bags tight and whispered jokes until tiredness won. In the middle of the night I woke up and stepped outside carefully. The forest was completely dark except for my torch beam. Fireflies glowed like tiny moving stars. I felt both small and powerful at the same time. The mountain was alive around us.

Before dawn we woke up, packed quickly and started the final short climb to the true summit. Only about fifteen minutes of careful walking and a small drop separated us from the top. Our legs ached but excitement pushed us forward. Suddenly the trees opened and we stood among large rocks at 1010 meters.
The summit of Gunung Belumut greeted us with cool wind and wide views. On a clear morning you can see rolling green hills and distant valleys stretching across Johor. Thick mist floated below us like a soft white sea. The famous big boulders, including one that looks a bit like a crown or knife, sat proudly at the highest point. We climbed carefully onto the rocks, held our cameras high and took many pictures.

We posed again and again – jumping shots, group hugs, serious explorer faces and silly faces. One friend balanced carefully on a smooth boulder while another took photos of the endless tree tops. The air felt pure and the view made all the hard climbing worthwhile. We stayed for almost an hour, eating breakfast of bread and jam while the sun climbed higher.
Coming down proved almost as thrilling as going up. The steep rope sections demanded full attention.
